1. The differences between Saussure’s concepts “langue” and “parole” on the one hand and Chomsky’s concepts “competence” and “performance” are not relevant in the present context.

2. Edmondson’s contribution was among the first chapters commissioned for this handbook. It turned out to be the final paper which he completed. Willis J. Edmondson died in December 2009.
