MINDFULNESS AND SELF-AWARENESS

Weick and Sutcliffe’s (2001) writings on mindfulness, as related to aircraft carriers, suggested including “a preoccupation with updating” (p. 44), can be adapted to convey the practitioner’s need for updating personal understandings and skills in preparation for planning and leading change. According to Weick and Sutcliffe, one must reexamine discarded information by refining, differentiating, updating, and replacing misinformation with information that is relevant to a situation. They offer “a mouthful” definition of mindfulness as:
“the combination of ongoing scrutiny of existing expectations, continuous refinement and differentiation of expectations based on newer experiences, willingness and capability ...
