Shortly after arriving at the University of Massachusetts as an assistant professor in the mid 1980s, Alan Robinson’s career took an unexpected turn. His background—he had a BA/MA in mathematics from Cambridge University and a newly minted PhD in Operations Research from Johns Hopkins University—had prepared him well for modeling business problems mathematically, but he was beginning to realize that this approach was losing its relevance.
