A sustainable energy future will depend on making appropriate use of all possible resources while ensuring a stable and affordable supply that complies with current and future regulations for protecting the environment. Our future energy portfolio will aim to maximize the use of so-called renewable energy sources such as wind, solar (photovoltaic and solar- thermal), geothermal, hydro, wave-power, and biomass, but it must involve realistic expectations for these sources. Further, transitioning to the maximized use of renewable energy must be coordinated with an orderly reduction of reliance on traditional energy sources currently used for baseline production of electric power, chiefly coal, natural gas, and nuclear fission.
