My exposure to poker has been extremely limited, both by inexperience and by my own innate caution. I completely understand the attraction of playing for high stakes in Las Vegas, Reno, or similar places. It’s just that when I think about waging anything more than two or three dollars on a hand, my palms start to sweat.
A few years ago, I visited Atlantic City and watched people playing poker. The stakes even then weren’t especially high—the kitty never, as far as I could tell, got much above $50—but I found that after five minutes I had to turn away. I just couldn’t deal with it.
