6.5. Multilevel Voltage Source Inverters
The multilevel inverters have drawn significant attention in high power applications such as ac motor drive systems, flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) and RES. The major advantages of multilevel inverters are the following:
• High voltage and power capability.
• Low harmonic content.
• Reduced switching losses.
• Increased efficiency.
• Good electromagnetic compatibility.
The output voltage of multilevel inverters is synthesized from a number of voltage levels which are generated by the division of the input dc source using capacitors.
