W3C—World Wide Web Consortium
The World Wide Consortium is made up of mostly large software-orientated computer companies—for example, Microsoft, IBM, Sun, Adobe—who constitute the paid-up membership of W3C. W3C expresses its global aspirations by having bases in three continents: in North America at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in Europe at INRIA, and in Asia at Keio University, Japan.
The W3C XML activities have been described as consisting (so far) of three phases. Phase 1 led to the production of the XML 1.0 Recommendation of February, 1998. Phase 2 led to the Namespaces in XML and Stylesheet Linking Recommendations in 1999.
