Aperture

The aperture is the size of the lens opening that lets the light through. The bigger the opening in the lens, the more light is allowed through. The size of the aperture is measured as a fraction and is called the f-stop. The bigger the number on the bottom of the fraction, the smaller the opening in the lens. So f/5.6 is a smaller opening than f/4.0 and f/8.0 is a larger opening than f/16. The maximum (widest possible) aperture is a function of the lens—not the camera—as it is the physical size of the opening.
