The positive effects of light are well known to everyone. Leo Tolstoy expressed it succinctly: “All the diversity, all the charm, and all the beauty of life are made up of light and shade.” Robert Gernhardt—a poet, caricaturist, and painter of the Tuscan countryside—similarly sums up the practice of painting with light in a ballad: “Put some things in the light and watch what the light will do to such things....”
