Solid Dosage Forms

INTRODUCTION

Solid dosage forms (SDFs) are the drug delivery devices formulated as both single and bulk dose forms suitable for oral administration. It mainly comprises of tablets, capsules, cachets, pills, powders and granules (Fig. 5.1). The oral route offers several advantages such as accurate dosing, physicochemical integrity of the active medicament, elegant appearance, flexibility in formulating the cost-effective formulations with an assured patient compliance. The two most important rate determining steps governing the overall bioavailability of drugs are disintegration and dissolution.
