Paul Cézanne has been called a father of modern art. Although he was considered an Impressionist painter during his era, he existed for much of his career as an artistic outsider and was misunderstood and criticized for his art.
Cézanne was determined to prove his skills and moved in a new creative and personal direction different from the dominant trends of the era. He painted the same subjects over and over to gain new knowledge and perspective. Slowly he began to earn the respect of society that he felt he readily deserved.
