Launched into life in Vancouver, BC, Canada, he was given the brand name Barry Milavsky. He graduated from the University of British Columbia and then did graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania receiving an MA in Communications. As a student, he worked in the summers as a prospector in Alaska and northern British Columbia.
On graduation from Penn, he immediately began work at Young & Rubicam on Madison Avenue in New York. He also worked at Benton & Bowles, NY, before joining Grey Advertising in Caracas, Venezuela, and then Grey in Toronto. He joined Canadian agency Ronalds–Reynolds, was a board director, and helped the company rapidly grow with business gains until it was purchased by FCB-Publicis.
