I first met David Boje in the clattery and chattery Bouillon Chartier restaurant in Montmartre. He was clad entirely in Harley Davidson–branded gear, right down to his socks. The performer in David just commanded the space around him, wordlessly, eccentrically, instantly. You noticed him. An American in Paris, certainly, but Paris, and France were undoubtedly in the American—and they had already begun to shape his thought and his work. But David was more than presence, more than show.
