Chapter 16. Enterprise Manager

Oracle Enterprise Manager (EM) is a graphical user interface console that allows you to manage Oracle databases. In addition, EM also provides a number of services used to help manage and monitor your database instances, including:

Discovery Wizard

Finds all active instances available to Enterprise Manager.

Job system

Allows you to schedule maintenance tasks or the running of SQL scripts. This system tracks the outcome of jobs and notifies you of their completion status or any intervening errors. A job can be implemented with any SQL or operating system commands.

Event system

Monitors target instances for events, such as outages or resource problems.

Alert system

Notifies you of the status of jobs or events through the Enterprise Manager Console, email, or your pager. EM gives you the option of disabling the alert system to prevent excessive messaging for planned events.

Security

Provides security implementation options for administrators, target databases, and objects.

System reporting

Reports on status, usage, and configuration of target systems, as well as on the contents of the Enterprise Manager repository.
