Chapter 2. Getting Standard

Not that many years go, the web was a mess. Competing browsers developed separate and incompatible technologies, and before too long, you were seeing sites that said, “IE Only,” or, “Best when viewed with Netscape Navigator.” Many websites aligned themselves with just one browser, and users were forced to have both browsers handy so that they wouldn’t be excluded from a site simply because they had the wrong software.

As a battle cry, a wave of web developers and technologists began to call for greater adherence to web standards and the dissolution of the proprietary protocols that various browsers used.
