NONCOHERENT (DIRECT) DETECTION

In Chapter 3, we concentrated on developing a statistical model for an optical receiver. We are now interested in applying this model to the analysis and synthesis of optical communication systems. We begin in this chapter by devoting attention to a communication system employing noncoherent or direct detection. Noncoherent detection occurs when no use is made of the spatial coherence of the optical field, and the detector responds only to the power in the received field. We consider as a prime objective the accurate transmission of a desired data waveform from the transmitter to the receiver output using this type of system.
