As it was with so many reporters of my generation, I was a newspaperman before I got into TV and my first newspaper job was working the night police beat on my hometown newspaper, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
These days in television news you will start in a newsroom that is vastly different than the one I started in. Today we have high definition and high tech that makes the business much more than writing and reporting. But those basic skills are the difference-makers. Learning to write, report and present on camera are the most important skills to learn. They are what will get you a career in television.
