Chapter 9. Streaming Media: NOOK Video, UltraViolet, Hulu Plus, Netflix, and Pandora
YOUR NOOK HD IS a superb ereader, of course, but it’s also a great entertainment machine for watching movies and TV shows and listening to music. Its high-resolution screen gives you crisp, clean video. And using the NOOK HD’s headphone jack, you can listen to music or movies in glorious stereo on headphones or an external speaker. Understanding Streaming Media
NOOK Video, Netflix, Hulu Plus, UltraViolet, and Pandora all use a technique called streaming, which means the movies, TV shows, and music aren’t stored on your NOOK HD or played from there. Instead, they live on big computers called servers owned by those services, which send the video wirelessly to your NOOK HD—when it’s connected to a WiFi network. So if you’re not connected to a WiFi network, you can’t use those services or other streaming media services like Grooveshark or Rhapsody.
Furthermore, if your WiFi connection isn’t a strong one, you may experience hiccups when watching movies or TV shows and listening to music. So if you find blips and delays, try to find a better WiFi connection. If you’re at home, try repositioning your router, or moving to a different seat or room. If you’re using a public WiFi service, try moving to a different location.
