Destiny is a word that both critics and admirers associate with Douglas MacArthur. His Virginia-born mother implanted a sense of destiny in her son at an early age, often telling him that he would become a great man, as great a soldier as his much-accomplished father and Robert E. Lee himself. From an early age, MacArthur appeared to wholeheartedly accept this destiny. He alluded to the role that destiny was playing in his life on many occasions, but he also worked hard to prepare for it and achieve it.
