Pathway Four companies lead, shape, and drive the transformation of their industries to achieve net zero emissions. They build on their own Pathways to net zero to take a leadership role in transforming their industries and even the larger economy. A Pathway Four company may start out as a large, incumbent, mature organization transforming its business model on Pathway Two or as an innovative startup or disruptor on Pathway Three but then decides to increase its net zero ambitions by optimizing its impact and seizing the opportunity to gain competitive advantage by leading a larger transformation of its industry. In short, Pathway Two and Pathway Three companies that also choose to transform their industries are true disruptors that may reap the rewards for their vision and courage.
Pathway Four companies have a high degree of net zero transition planning complexity and require leaders with leadership capacity in the operational, business, and global systems‐thinking domains (see Exhibit 10.1), as will be discussed in Chapter 13.
