Glossary

Below are brief explanations of how bargaining and negotiation terms have been applied in the context of this book.

Bargaining. This is the formal process of negotiations between the employer and the union. It usually refers to the process of negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement; however, it can also refer to the process of negotiating other formal agreements between the parties.

Benchmark job. This is a union job (also called a job classification) that is used as a reference point with other organizations for purposes of comparing compensation. It assumes that the essential job functions and any prerequisites are the same in the comparator organizations. Discussed in Final Thoughts.
