9Microphones
A microphone will allow you to translate any sound that you can hear into a signal that can be recorded and used by other studio equipment, such as a mixing desk or recording device. Electronic instruments that provide their own output connection will not require a microphone, as the sound they produce can be directly connected to other studio equipment, such as a mixing desk (see Exercise 11.2).

In order to record vocals or an acoustic instrument, you will need to use a microphone.
