Music is a complex copyright to understand mainly because there are two copyright holders in a piece of recorded music. There is the copyright in the composition, which is controlled by the publisher; and the copyright in the recording, which is generally held by the record label or, if not, a company that commercially released the recording.
A publisher oversees the use and exploitation of copyrights. This could be a handful of songs held by one individual, or thousands of songs and catalogs held by a major company like Universal Music Publishing or Sony/ATV Music Publishing.
