Preface

The course on Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy was introduced in the undergraduate and postgraduate classes of many universities and institutes sometime in 1970s or 1980s. However, the approach adopted to cover the course on spectroscopy was not uniform. Some of the universities laid more emphasis on the quantum mechanical treatment of the various kinds of spectroscopy, namely, Microwave, Infrared, Raman and Ultraviolet/Visible, while the Organic and Biochemistry Department of others laid more emphasis on the application part such as Infrared, Ultraviolet/Visible and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.
