The ideas on imperialism of Ronald Robinson and John Gallagher have provoked more debate than those of any other modern historians on this subject. Whether one agrees or not with those ideas, it is not possible for any historian of British expansion overseas to ignore them – nor to ignore the language of imperialism which they have made essential currency.
