7 OTHER MODELLING NOTATIONS

This chapter shows three additional entity relationship notations and compares them with the Ellis-Barker notation and the UML class model notation. For this comparison, the same business scenario is used for all. The additional notations are:

  • the IDEF1X notation;
  • the Information Engineering notation;
  • the Chen notation.

Figure 7.1 shows a model of the business scenario drawn using the Ellis-Barker notation. As mentioned in Chapter 1, this notation was developed in the early 1980s by Harry Ellis and Richard Barker when they were working for CACI, an IT services company. Richard Barker then took the notation and its related methodology into the development of Oracle’s CASE tool.
