IP Mobility
First, there was voice that connected people all over the world for decades. It still does. Then almost simultaneously came the Internet and mobile voice technology. It is inevitable that personal mobile voice or personal mobility itself, without undue exaggeration, and the Internet are going to meet in quite unpredictable ways. It is only a matter of time, and indeed we have begun noticing the beginning of this trend. So, why would mobile voice, which works fine on its own, need the Internet Protocol? Perhaps the answer lies in recognizing that mobile voice networks were not designed to provide all the different applications that the IP itself was not intended to provide but is now doing anyway! The only feasible way, it might be argued, of supporting applications, imagined or otherwise, is by embracing IP. And those applications are increasingly mobile and often are only mobile in some parts of the world. Perhaps the day when mobile Internet applications will be taken for granted is not too far..
