Beyond the Basic LAN
It’s rare to run into any size of enterprise, from a home office to a campus enterprise, that doesn’t have a wired LAN (or two) that acts as the core of the enterprise network. The Internet connects to that LAN, and the servers have nice Gigabit Ethernet cards plugged into the powerful switches. The enterprise might even have a DMZ with an Internet server, but all have this core, wired network.
It’s time to expand from this core LAN and start adding the other technologies that are so common in modern networks. We’ll start with the most common of all, 802.11 wireless, making sure you’re comfortable with the core protocols that collectively make 802.11 work.
