Quotas

Also high on the top 10 list of useful new features in NTFS 5.0 is the disk quota support. Quotas enable administrators to control how much disk space each user can store on an NTFS volume. Quotas are completely transparent to users—that is, until they are violated. If a user attempts to exceed a quota, the system indicates that the disk is full.

Quotas are managed based on the owner of the file. When a file is created, the SID of the user who created it is attached to the security descriptor. The storage allocated by all this file's streams is charged against that user's quota. Running usage totals, along with the actual quotas, are stored in the $Quota metafile.
