Creating Protection Groups

As mentioned previously in this chapter, a protection group is a collection of data sources that share the same protection configuration. Before data can be protected by DPM, you must create at least one protection group, in which you specify the target servers you want to back up, the backup frequency, and the data retention frequency among other backup setting parameters. Backups can be deemed short term or long term, where short-term storage provides for real-time immediate recovery of information, whereas long-term storage is for archival purposes.
