The Role of XSLT in SharePoint 2010
In SharePoint 2010, XSLT is the primary rendering technology used for list and library views. Next to CSS, XSLT is the formatting directive for SharePoint data sources, including lists and libraries, and any external data sources connected to SharePoint and presented in SharePoint pages using and XLV or DFWP. XSLT is basically responsible for presenting and rendering data throughout SharePoint lists and sites, and ensuring that the data is accessible via a browser or mobile device. XSLT manipulates data (XML) in lists and libraries and presents it in a variety of ways, including, but not limited to, style, conditional formatting, filtering, and sorting.
