Data Retrieval Service

The SharePoint Data Retrieval Service, located in the SharePoint Central Administration under Application Management, is ultimately responsible for the types of data queries allowed on a Web application and for provisioning XML data sourced from data sources for subsequent manipulation and transformation with XSL/XSLT and Data Views within SharePoint Designer. If you disable (uncheck) the Data Retrieval Services option on the Data Retrieval Service configuration page then any queries that you create in SharePoint Designer, including database queries, fail. By default, the following data retrieval service types are available:
