Restricting Access to a Document
Word uses a protocol called Information Rights Management (IRM) to determine who is allowed access to a document. This protocol is used either by an IRM service on a network or through the IRM Service available from Microsoft over the Internet. You identify who is granted access to a document by entering the person’s e-mail address. That person must then use an appropriate IRM service to verify his or her identity, based on the e-mail address, and must download a license.
