XML Web services enable access to remote and enterprise-level functions and data on a mobile device. They use Web standards to access functions via Hypertext Transmission Protocol (HTTP) on an Intranet or across the Internet. A connection with the server providing the XML Web service is required only while a function is being called and the reply is being returned to the smart device. XML Web service access can be configured easily through a firewall, and access to an XML Web service can be integrated with Windows security, secured with a plain text user name and password, or configured for anonymous use.
