Azure Files

Overview

Microsoft introduced the Azure Files service in September 2015. It provides support for the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol and a whole host of features to enable organizations to migrate from on-premises file storage hosted on Windows Servers to the Azure Cloud. Over the years, several features have been added to Azure Files, including the following:

  • Support for Network File System (NFS) protocol for access using Linux and MacOS clients

  • Storage encryption for secure data hosting

  • Integration with Azure Backup for seamless backups and restores

  • Low latency data access through caching features of Azure File Sync with on-premises file servers using SMB and various other features
