Implementing a new technology is never easy. Show me an IT admin who says his technology implementation is flawless and I’ll show you someone who is stretching the truth. There will always be bumps in the road — some big and some small — especially when migrating from a legacy system. Whether you stumble and fall on those bumps depends on how much planning went into the endeavor and how well you prepared your organization.

Change is hard. Even in small organizations, I’ve seen pockets of people who resist change. I start talking to them about the cloud and the awesome features in the new version of Outlook, and they tell me how much they like their trusted Outlook 2003, thank you very much.

Too many times, I’ve seen IT leaders lose their jobs over a bad technology implementation. Most unsuccessful implementations share two common elements: a lack of planning and preparation.
