Separation of mixtures: fundamentals and technologies

Abstract:
The modern city is a marvellous mixture bringing all manner of products, foods and people together. The end result of these activities is waste; waste that magically disappears with the flush of a toilet or placement of a bag on a curb. In this view, metropolises are waste aggregators and generators with all of the waste having to leave the city, by conservation of mass. It is in our interest to separate the benign components but this is rarely easy and never free. This chapter discusses several industrial separation processes and important metrics for their comprehension.
