Project: Displacing the Hill
Although the Hill surface is modeled with a number of undulations, it does not carry fine detail. To create the illusion that the hill is covered by rocks, stones, and dirt, as well as cracks and crevices, you can create the custom color bitmap. Because there are no specific features of the hill that require isolation or exaggeration, you can create a generic bitmap that features an organic pattern. Once again, combining photos of varied surfaces in Photoshop can give you a complex result. For example, in Figure 5.27, a bitmap is created by combining photos of small rocks, dirt, and rusty metal.
