Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 brought an entirely new architecture to the table. It went from a robust batch processor in SMS 2 to a highly scalable web services architecture. Although SMS 2003 was innovative, it still had to address and support legacy systems.
Configuration Manager 2007 no longer has to deal with a lot of the legacy baggage that was required in SMS 2003.
