3 Working with Layer Masks
Alongside adjustment layers, layer masks are one of the most important elements of layer techniques. They enable us to hide selected parts of a layer by making them transparent or invisible, and they make it possible to selectively apply the effects of adjustment layers. This capability is what makes adjustment layers so powerful. A mask enables us to paint an adjustment into an image using a white brush on an otherwise black mask or to hide selected parts of a layer using a black brush on a white mask.
