1What Is Facilitation?

What we call leadership consists mainly of knowing how to follow. The wise leader stays in the background and facilitates other people’s process.

When two or more people meet, it is almost certain that there will be some degree of conflict. In working groups, where the members come from diverse backgrounds, characteristics, interests and abilities, different opinions are inevitable and normal. Ideas collide. Personalities clash. Motives and interests wrestle with the greater good. The direction of the group goes astray, the goals of the meeting are sidelined and organisational objectives deserted. Not that conflict is all bad because agreements borne from disagreements are sometimes the most novel yet most valuable.
