Definitions of Commonly Used Terms

The following definitions are intended to reduce conflicting interpretations and to increase the consistency of physician reporting.

New and Established Patients

A new patient is a patient who has not received any professional services within the past 3 years from the physician, qualified health care professional, or other physician of the same specialty and subspecialty who belongs to the same group practice.

Established Patient

An established patient is a patient who has received professional services within the past 3 years from a physician, qualified health care professional, or other physician of the same specialty and subspecialty who belongs to the same group practice.
