Manipulating Assumptions

In projects, we can account for different levels of risk using strengths of dependency. Once we classify dependencies within a DSM spreadsheet, we can use them to reorder DSM spreadsheet elements or assess risks associated with our schedule approach.

Each DSM spreadsheet element is assigned a risk level of A for strong, B for moderate, and C for weak. This is summarized in Figure 14.1.

 Often, any weak dependencies can be safely omitted entirely from our DSM spreadsheet.

To show one use of dependency classification, we look at building construction. Building construction is perhaps the most mature of all engineering disciplines. If any area is a fully rational and optimized endeavor, it should be building construction. ...
