Introduction

This book encapsulates learnings from an improbable journey, not yet complete. The third child of a small-town postmaster and a grain trader for Cargill, I fell in love with manufacturing the first time I saw it. The choreography of information, tangible things, people, and communication immediately attracted me.

I already had degrees in economics and through those was exposed to two fundamental concepts, one of which is absolutely true, the other of which is demonstrably false. The former is scarcity; the latter the rational man. Both suppositions are impactful in building a successful and enduring manufacturing business.
