Light radiated by the sun, or whatever other source is employed, travels through space and falls on the surface of the subject. According to the way in which it is received or rejected, a complex pattern of light, shade and colour results. This is interpreted by us from past experience in terms of three-dimensional solidity. The picture made by the camera is a more-or-less faithful representation of what a single eye sees, and, from the light and shade in the positive image, the process of visual perception can arrive at a reasonably accurate interpretation of the form and nature of the objects portrayed.
