WHEN a distinction is made, the term “sex” refers to categories of people who are biologically male or female. “Gender” usually refers to sociocultural meanings ascribed to these biological categories as well as transgender status. This usage will be followed in this chapter. (However, see the discussion and shaded box in Chapter 3 for another view discussing changes in this distinction and the gender binary.) Roles are expectations for behavior resulting from one's position in a society; they vary in clarity, breadth, and strength and are usually associated with sanctions or consequences that apply when someone follows or violates that role.
