Unique identifiers

Abstract

Authors’ names may be written in many different ways, especially if they were transliterated. They may include full or abbreviated first name, the presence or absence of middle initials, and other variations. This chapter discusses how publishers are approaching the problem to make it possible to identify the authors independently of how their names appear in their works. Creating unique author identifiers such as ORCID and ResearcherID is seen as a possible remedy for this problem. The chapter also includes information about two identifiers of chemical names—the International Chemical Identifier (InChI) and SMILES.
