Abstract:
Archivists, curators, and libraries working with contemporary image collections need to understand the basic technologies and processes involved in building a cohesive set of digital images, together with the information required to access, preserve, and manage them. This chapter imparts the fundamentals of digital images, comparing the distinct characteristics of digital and analog images and the usefulness of digital surrogates of analog originals. Definitions of and recommendations for dynamic range, bit depth, resolution, master and derivative files, interpolation, compression, and file formats are given, with the needs of information professionals in mind.
