There are so many different versions out there to help you assess health and safety risks in your workplace, it is no wonder people become confused! It is not supposed to be a complicated, academic exercise that can only be carried out by a specialist. However, it is a logical approach to decide how risky your hazards are and what the potential harm or injury might be. There are some areas where technical or specialist help is needed when assessing levels of noise or density of particles in the air, for instance. But the main process of risk assessment can be carried out by you and/or a colleague, in your own small business, to a level where you know whether you need professional help.
