We now turn to a central theme of this book—the issue of match or how much is enough to accomplish specific purposes. The idea of match is closely linked to contingency theories which sought more sophisticated approaches to determining the resources necessary for particular organizational ends. Here we focus on three classics of organizational thought: Woodward’s extensive research relating to technology and structure, Lawrence and Lorsch’s work on differentiation and integration, and Daft and Lengel’s more recent work on media richness.
